Model United Nations in Singapore
From Friday January 23rd to Sunday January 25th, two RISU-Inter students, Aika Kanda and Yuito Mikami, took part in the Model United Nations conference in Singapore. Held only in English, this event attracts bright students from around the world. There were, of course, many delegates from Malaysia, Indonesia, India and other Asian countries. Quite a few students from Europe (Latvia, Germany, and Ukraine among others) also participated.
The schedule was very intense. Students were divided into different committees and were given a country to represent. Our students became delegates from Jamaica. Yuito was assigned to SOCHUM (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee) and Aika was in WHO (World Health Organization). Over two day and a half days, 9 meetings were held, with the average meeting time being about 3 hours. Although both of our students were initially awed by the intelligence and sophistication of their peers, they soon became acclimDSC_8931ated to their surroundings and participated enthusiastically. On the final day of the conference, both volunteered to give speeches in front of their respective committees. In the end, our students had an exhausting but exhilarating experience. Let’s hope more students volunteer in the future!

About the Model United Nations
Aika Kanda
We finally came back to Japan. As you know, the Model United Nations was very difficult! On the first day, I was so nervous. Everyone looked so intelligent and old. In the first committee session, I got so confused. Almost everyone knew how it works, and those who didn’t were timid.
After finishing the first day, I got so tired and I soon went to bed.
The second day, I had a very hard schedule. I had four sessions and the longest session was three and a half hours! But I got used to the system, so I decided to give a speech in front of all of the delegates. But we had too many “motion” times, so we didn’t have time for the general speakers. As you can imagine, I got so tired and I soon went to bed again.
The last day of the committee, we had two sessions and both were just two hours. The most important thing is, I could finally give a speech in front of the other delegates! It was very scary and I got outrageously nervous. But my friends encouraged me a lot. Moreover, after I finished speaking, they said “Good Job!” to me. I was really grateful for their support.
I learned many things from the Model United Nations. First, the importance of insistence. Second, the necessity of discussion. Third, the importance of comprehension. Fourth, the value of communication. I got a lot of courage from participating in the Model United Nations. P1010847
